What is psychotherapy?

...... elaboration of early life experience is important only if this new understanding of past events and conflicts ultimately results in more effective interaction and adaptation to stress and conflict in the present (Dewald, 1964)

Psychotherapy is a particular kind of conversation or dialogue that facilitates self exploration and greater self understanding with a view to engaging more effectively with problems of living. It is sometimes differentiated from counselling by its greater focus on long standing issues that often originate in childhood and early family experiences.

Cognitive analytic therapy is a relatively short term form of psychotherapy that pays particular attention to early relationship experience as the key to understanding some of the difficulties encountered in our relationships with other people and the way we feel about ourselves in adult life. It is an integrative therapy that draws on psychoanalytic, cognitive and humanistic traditions in psychotherapy. It also takes account of the wider social, cultural and political contexts in which we live that can affect our mental health and the way we feel about ourselves.

Short term or time limited psychotherapy is often the most appropriate form of therapy for many people and this can be discussed during your initial consultation.
